On December 28, 2023, former NFL punter Hunter Niswander, who played for the Dallas Cowboys and now competes in the United States Football League (USFL), found himself in an unexpected role: delivering his daughter on the side of a highway. This extraordinary event unfolded in Solon, Ohio, as Hunter and his wife Corinne rushed to Hillcrest Hospital but realized they wouldn't make it in time.
The Unexpected Delivery
Hunter Niswander, a standout athlete from Woodridge High School and Northwestern, is no stranger to high-pressure situations. However, nothing could have prepared him for the moment when his wife, Corinne, told him to pull over on 422 West, just 10 minutes into their 20-minute commute to the hospital. As Corinne's labor progressed rapidly, Hunter sprang into action, dialing 911 and assisting his wife through the delivery.
The 911 call captures the intensity of the moment, with Corinne expressing her pain and Hunter offering encouragement. "You're doing amazing. I love you," he said, urging her to push. The situation became even more critical when they realized their newborn wasn't breathing, and the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck twice. Hunter quickly unwrapped the cord, and to their relief, the baby began crying shortly after.
A Miracle Unfolds
First responders from the Solon Fire Department arrived promptly, providing crucial assistance. The baby and Corinne were taken to the hospital by EMS, where they received further care. Reflecting on the experience, Corinne described it as a miracle, acknowledging the potential risks but expressing gratitude for the positive outcome.
Hunter, now the father of two healthy girls, credits their faith for helping them navigate this challenging moment. "I think, in times of difficulty, or when you don't know what's gonna happen, I think for us it's leaning into our faith," he said.
