On Sunday night, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to mock Taylor Swift after she faced booing from some spectators at the Super Bowl. The incident seems to have reignited a long-standing feud between Trump and the pop star, which began last year when Swift publicly endorsed his opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris, in the presidential election.
The Super Bowl Incident
Taylor Swift attended Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome to support her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce. When her face appeared briefly on the giant screen before the game, some fans in the stadium booed. Swift responded by giving a side-eye to the camera and then laughing, seated next to rapper Ice Spice.
Trump, who was also present at the game for a portion of it, seized the opportunity to comment on the situation. In his Truth Social post, he quipped, "The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift." He further claimed that Swift was "BOOED out of the Stadium" and implied that the boos came from his supporters, adding, "MAGA is very unforgiving!"
Background of the Feud
The tension between Trump and Swift escalated in September last year when Swift endorsed Kamala Harris for president. This move was prompted by Trump sharing AI-generated images suggesting Swift's support for his campaign, which she vehemently denied. Swift emphasized the need for transparency about her political stance, stating that such misinformation "really conjured up my fears around AI."
Following Swift's endorsement, Trump expressed his displeasure, stating that she "seems to always endorse a Democrat and she’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace." A few days later, he posted on Truth Social, "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!"
Support for Swift
Not everyone was critical of Swift, however. Tennis legend Serena Williams, who was also at the Super Bowl, tweeted her support for the singer, saying, "I love you Taylor Swift, don’t listen to those booo!!"
Trump's Other Super Bowl Comments
Earlier in the day, Trump had predicted a Chiefs win during an interview with Fox News, praising quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany, a self-described Trump fan. After the game, Trump criticized the NFL's kickoff rule, comparing it unfavorably to college football.
The ongoing feud between Trump and Swift highlights the complex intersection of politics and celebrity culture in the United States, where public figures often find themselves at the center of political discourse.
